ALUMINIUM PECHINEY

Pechiney is engaged in all aspects of the bauxite, alumina and aluminum businesses, and has a production capacity in primary aluminum of more than 1 Million Tons/year.
  • ALUMINIUM PECHINEY is the world leader of the electrolysis technology
  • The process consists of the reduction by electrolysis of a molten bath of alumina and cryolite (a sodium aluminum fluoride) in a reduction cell or "pot" lined with carbon. Powerful electric currents are passed through the cell (up to 300 kA).
  • Aluminum obtained by electrolysis is naturally rich in impurities contained in the raw materials (notably alumina and electrodes), mostly iron and silicon.
  • The common commercial standards confine themselves to a purity standard of around 99.7%.
 

The molten primary aluminum can then be transformed into four principal categories of products:

Ingots

Rolling slabs

Wires

Billets
Lingots Plates Wire Billlets
ingots in various grades of aluminum, including alloys for casting and molding  (e.g. engine blocks). rolling slabs for sheet and aluminum plate used for aircraft wings, tanks, pannels, canstock, foil machine wire for electrical (cables) and mechanical (welding, clips and fasteners, fencing) applications extrusion billets for the manufacture of road and rail vehicle frames, building systems and forging billets (landing gear, high pressure bottles)
